Job Overview:

The American Underground is one of eleven Google for Startups Tech Hubs in North America and home to 250+ startups, investors, university offices, and more. With three campuses and a national virtual community, the American Underground is looking for a marketing associate to join their fun, collaborative, and focused team.

This role will oversee the AU brand and digital marketing activities, and will be responsible for social media management and email marketing along with other outreach responsibilities. In addition, this person will assist the Executive Director with sales activities including prospect communication and tours. This is an integral role with meaningful responsibility and learning opportunities, ideal for a creative self-starter who can pair strategic thinking with a hands-on work ethic.

Responsibilities:

Digital Marketing

  • Own the AU social media channels
    • Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook
    • Drive social media content and growth strategy
    • Create and manage content schedule
    • Capture media-quality photo and video assets
    • Engage authentically with followers
  • Own external email marketing
    • Gather and prioritize story topics
    • Draft email copy and create graphics
  • Assist with website management
    • With ED, manage content on the AU website

Internal Communications

  • Own the weekly AU community newsletter
  • Own internal promotion of AU events and programs via Slack, email, digital screens, and other communication channels
    • With event leads, draft marketing copy and graphics

Sales Assistance

  • With ED, manage inbound membership prospect communication and other external inquiries
  • Provide tours to prospective members and other guests
  • Manage inbound meeting room rental inquiries including agreements and payment

Additional Duties

  • Assist AU team with event planning and management
  • Assist AU team with space upkeep and operations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of digital marketing and/or social media experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to focus in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines, anticipate next steps, be aware of prioritization
  • Demonstrate integrity, dependability, responsibility, accountability, self-awareness, work ethic, and empathy
  • Ability to connect well with people; warm, approachable, and patient
  • Excited to work with a large, diverse group of AU members

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with graphic design software, including Canva
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, including Mailchimp
  • Experience with photography and/or videography, including editing
  • Interest or passion for the startup ecosystem and entrepreneurship

Hours and Compensation:

  • Schedule: Average 25 hours per week, across 3-4 days per week
  • Hourly rate: $20 /hour

In order to capture social media content and build connections with AU members, this is primarily an in-person role with some hybrid flexibility.
