Overview: The American Underground is a entrepreneurship-focused coworking space and professional community. With three campuses in downtown Durham, including a brand-new space at American Tobacco Campus, the AU is home to 200+ startups, entrepreneurs, investors, agencies, remote workers, nonprofits, and more.
The AU is seeking to fill a hands-on and dynamic new role to support our thriving community of members. This position will play a key role in ensuring that the AU is welcoming, inclusive, and productive for members, and that we deliver high-quality events and community-building activities. This position will report to the AU’s Community Operations Manager, and is an in-person position based at the AU’s locations in downtown Durham.

Serve as a visible, friendly, welcoming steward of the AU community. Assist AU members with day-to-day questions, concerns, and ideas.

Assist with setting up new AU members with a welcoming and inclusive approach. This includes setting up member access, billing, parking, and office spaces.

Ensure that all locations are ready for AU members to work productively. This includes making sure that the coffee is fresh, the conference rooms are reset, the tech is working smoothly, and that we maintain an inventory of supplies.

Manage mail and deliveries for two of AU’s locations

Assist with providing tours to prospective members and outside groups, as applicable.

Liaise with the property managers, housekeeping vendors, and other vendors as necessary on building maintenance, cleanliness, and/or safety issues.

Assist with regular member-focused events. This includes weekly Member Mixers, monthly New Member Brunches, and other community-building activities.

Assist with the move-in/move-out process including moving desks, chairs, etc.
Required/Preferred Qualifications:

1-3 years experience working in events, retail, customer service, or another customer-facing role

Experience working in a structured, process-driven, member-facing environment

Demonstrated ability to serve as a welcoming, polished first point of contact for members, guests, and visitors in a high-visibility environment

Excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask, and good attention to detail

Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and collaborate with a team

Interest in startups and entrepreneurship is a plus!

Working proficiency in office productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace) and comfort learning internal systems for invoicing, tracking, and documentation
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Ability to lift up to 25–30 pounds (event setup materials, deliveries).

Ability to move tables, chairs, and light equipment as needed for event setup.

Ability to navigate shared spaces and respond quickly to operational needs.
Work Conditions:

This is an in-person role in a shared office environment

Occasional nights and weekends required, but this role will primarily operate during regular weekday business hours

Occasional local travel may be necessary to visit company-owned properties
