Intern – Research and Development

Job Description:

Labcorp is seeking a Research and Development Intern to join our team in
Durham, NC!

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

Job Responsibilities:

  • Learn and understand basic lab procedures and department workflows

  • Assist staff with routine tasks that support assay development and validation

  • Maintain detailed, organized records of all work in laboratory notebooks or approved electronic tools (e.g., Excel, Word)

  • Perform low- to medium-complexity lab tasks under supervision

  • Assist with basic data review and analysis appropriate to training level

  • Keep the laboratory clean, organized, and safe

  • Complete logs, forms, and other administrative duties as requested

  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures to ensure safety and quality standards

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current high school junior or senior

Additional Job Standards:

  • Interest in chemistry, biology, or related lab sciences

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and willingness to follow laboratory procedures

  • Eagerness to learn new laboratory skills and scientific concepts

  • Show initiative and the ability to work independently under general supervision

  • Have a genuine interest in laboratory science

  • Maintains professionalism, including punctuality and appropriate conduct

  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal

  • Actively participates in training sessions and applies newly learned skills accordingly

About the Team:

The Research & Development department develops and validates diagnostic and prognostics tests across the multi-disciplinary enterprise using innovative technologies. Interns will be immersed in the daily operations of the lab, gaining direct insight into the early assay development process, instrumentation, and workflow management. The intern will work alongside experienced Scientists who are passionate about mentoring and developing future lab professionals. While your primary placement will be within the R&D department, you will also have opportunities to learn how our clinical testing departments operate and contribute to patient care.

Benefits: Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD/LTD, 401(k), Paid Time Off (PTO) or Flexible Time Off (FTO), Tuition Reimbursement and Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Employees regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours, Casual, Intern, and Temporary employees are only eligible to participate in the 401(k) Plan.
